Judy's Custom Built Rig

1/18/2006
This is the system I built this week for my beautiful wife. Yes it really is a stuffed animal case. I found the Nemo stuffed fish at Toy R Us and thought it was workable with the ultra small components I ordered for her.

Specifications:

Case: Stuffed Nemo fish from Toy R Us, gutted like a brook trout, stuffing removed and reserved. I simply split the fish's belly open at it's stomach seam to preserve some of the fabric strength as I knew I would be testing it's limits.

Support Frame: Inside the fish is a hand made aluminum fish shaped frame, lined with 26 guage sheet metal for smoothness. The sheet metal "skin" is riveted to the aluminun frame. I'll post bare frame pictures the next time I take it apart for upgrades/repairs/maintenance.

DVD RW/CDRW: The DVD/CD is actually the "stand" for the computer system. That's right, it's a load bearing DVD :-) In pic 1321 the dvd opens right under the lower fin. The fabric is velcroed shut to cover the device most of the time. To use it you just open the velcro and fold the top flap under the frame to have 100% free access to the drive.

Processor: AMD 64 bit 3200+ with "Cool and Quiet" technology.

Motherboard: ASRock 939NF4G-SATA2 micro ATX form factor to keep the rig small.

RAM: Corsair TWINX1024 DDR2 PC3200 512MB x 2 = 1 GB total memory utilizing Dual Channel Memory

Video Card: GeForce MX 4000 PCI

Power Supply: JustPC FP350UM 350 watt Micro ATX

Hard Drive: Western Digital SATA 80GB. I did utilize the SATA functionality of this drive.

Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech Cordless Desktop EX 110

Monitor: Acer AL1716 - 17 inch LCD monitor

Total Fabrication Time: 10 hours

The whole shebang as she uses it.

The small mouth wire is the on/off switch. I don't know where I want to mount it yet.

The left eye contains the hard drive access LED and the right eye has the power on LED. Too much flash to see them though.

The gills? Well close enough. I thought about mounting a bracket here but that would make removing the shell much moe difficult in the future.

Bottom view of some of the frame work. I'm still concerned about airflow and cpu temp. After I monitor it for a few days I may have to mount a case fan if it over heats. So far so good though.

Some of the frame's sheet metal "skin". It looks rough but it's filed pretty smooth. In fact I have 0 nicks on my hands and fingers from this project. I knew all that time working with sheet metal during the summer would pay off.
